Goal Setting
Goal Setting
(Links on this page will open in new tabs.)
One of the ways that we can begin to plan for the future is to set goals. The definition of goal setting is the process of identifying specific objectives that one would like to achieve and then creating a plan of action to reach those objectives. You can set goals for yourself in many areas of life including your health, school work, sports, and relationships.
You can begin thinking about types of goals using the definitions below. Attached are worksheets to help you plan your personal goals and your career/college goals. Contact your counselor if you need assistance with creating realistic, achievable goals.
What is a Goal?
Goal- The purpose toward which an endeavor is directed or unique objectives that you strive to accomplish in a certain time frame.
Types of Goals
Long Term Goal- are ones that you will achieve over a longer period of time (e.g., one semester, one year, five years, or twenty years).
Short Term Goals
are ones that you will achieve in the near future (e.g., in a day, within a week, or possibly within a few months).
Process or Enabling Goals
mini-goals that you set to reach a larger goal. Often part of the action plan needed to achieve a larger goal.
SMART Goals
A goal that is specific, measureable, achievable, realistic, and timely.
- Questions to consider to make sure your goals are SMART:
- Is your goal specific?
- How will you measure your goal?
- Is your goal achievable?
- Is your goal realistic?
- How much time will it take to accomplish your goal?
Outcome goal
Any type of goal directed at the end result.
